Nowadays, whenever Wu Dan (a pseudonym) recalls the days when she was deeply involved in the Almighty God cult (the Church of Almighty God, or “CAG”), her heart always aches. Because she was misled into the cult, she became obsessively devoted, ignoring her family's pleas and leaving home to “fulfill her duties.” Unexpectedly, after four years of exhausting efforts, not only did she fail to “avoid disaster,” but she also almost lost her happy family.
Married far away, a blissful marriage, a happy family
Wu Dan, female, born in 1984, hails from a rural area in the outskirts of Neijiang City, Sichuan Province. After graduating from high school, she did not get into college and followed her village sisters to the city to work. She has sold insurance, worked in sales, and also served as a waitress. In 2015, Wu Dan met a young man from Anhui named Hong Bin at a trading company in Shanghai City. Hong Bin had just retired from the military, maintaining the excellent conduct of a soldier. He was very diligent and particularly hardworking, earning the affection of his colleagues. His handsome appearance and outstanding qualities won Wu Dan's heart, while Wu Dan's youthful beauty and gentle, generous nature deeply attracted Hong Bin. The two worked in the same department, fell in love with each other, and got married in 2016. Wu Dan married Hong Bin, who lived in a rural area of Huangshan, Anhui Province, despite the long distance, and gave birth to a son the following year. Hong Bin cherished Wu Dan and took great care of her, and his parents treated Wu Dan as their own daughter, making the family of five very happy.
A year after their son was born, Hong Bin continued to work at a trading company in Shanghai. Since the child was too young to attend daycare, Wu Dan took a long leave to stay in their rented apartment in Shanghai to take care of the child. Although there were hardships and fatigue, the couple managed their small family together, and the family lived a simple yet happy life.
However, Wu Dan did not expect that their happy days would soon be disrupted by the Almighty God cult.
Making friends unwisely, believing lies, and falling into a trap
In the first half of 2018, Wu Dan met a woman at the market while buying groceries. This woman was very talkative, friendly, and caring, and she quickly became acquainted with Wu Dan.
One day, this woman mysteriously asked Wu Dan, “Sister, do you believe in God?” Wu Dan replied, “Under the influence of my mother at home, I knew from a young age that Christianity has a God who created humanity, and that Jesus Christ was crucified to atone for human sins.”
“Look, the Jesus Christ you mentioned is already outdated. In the original Age of Law, God's name was Jehovah. He issued commandments for people to follow His laws, using the observance of these laws to restrain people. Then came the Age of Grace, where God changed His name to Jesus and incarnated to complete the work of redemption. Now it is the Age of Kingdom. Someone has already unlocked the mysteries of the Bible. Almighty God has once again incarnated in the form of a woman to begin the final secret work. Those who resist her will be eternally punished, while those who obey her will have their entire family blessed with peace and enter heaven after death.” The elder sister said.
After hearing this, Wu Dan was skeptical. This elder sister often showed her videos about the end of the world and various disasters, explaining that Almighty God is the one and only true God in the world, who can not only save humanity but also provide everything that believers need. After a few months, Wu Dan became deeply convinced of this “God” and began her journey of faith, falling into the trap of the Almighty God cult.
Following the instructions of this elder sister, Wu Dan not only read the CAG books such as The Word Appears in the Flesh and The Three Stages of God's Work every day, listened to and watched audio and video materials purchased from the “church,” but also took out her 20,000-yuan savings as a “donation” to show her loyalty to “God.”
Leaving home for “God,” abandoning work, and forsaking family
Afterwards, whenever there was time, this elder sister would take Wu Dan to participate in the church gatherings, “eating and drinking God's words.” She even gave Wu Dan a new name, “Su Hong,” and made her write a guarantee letter, swearing never to betray the organization or sell out the interests of the “family of God,” otherwise her son would die young, and her parents would be hit by a car.
Upon learning that Wu Dan believed in Almighty God, her husband Hong Bin was firmly opposed. However, Wu Dan told her husband that believing in Almighty God was just finding faith for herself, and that Almighty God would protect the family and bring only benefits, not harm. Deeply in love with his wife, Hong Bin, seeing that he couldn't persuade her, had no choice but to ask Wu Dan to “not neglect her work and take good care of the family,” feeling both heartbroken and helpless.
As time went by, Wu Dan went further and further down the path of believing in cult, sinking deeper and deeper. At the end of 2020, Wu Dan received a message from the organization: merely “eating and drinking God's words” and “making offerings in the church” was not enough; she also had to go out and “preach the gospel,” as going out to “fulfill her duties” was the greatest act of good! Thinking of her young son and her loving husband, Wu Dan was extremely conflicted. She finally came up with a “win-win” solution: to go back to her husband's hometown to “fulfill her duties” and “preach the gospel,” so that she could complete the “work of God's family” while having her mother-in-law's family help take care of the child. So, she resigned from her job in Shanghai and brought her young child to live with her in-laws in Huangshan, Anhui Province.
Because Wu Dan was young and well educated, and the local church had just been crippled by a crackdown from the public security authorities, Wu Dan was immediately appointed as the leader of the church by the cult organization, responsible for carrying out various daily tasks. After that, Wu Dan worked tirelessly day and night for the various affairs of the church. She ran around everywhere during the day, hardly having any free time, and when she got home at night, there was still endless work to do. She was busy even late at night and early in the morning. Although her son was by her side, she had no time to take care of him, relying entirely on her elderly in-laws to help look after the baby. At the beginning of 2021, Wu Dan's husband, Hong Bin, was hospitalized for retinal detachment due to work-related reasons and urgently needed family care. However, Wu Dan, who was obsessed with “believing in God,” ignored her husband's injury, claiming that she was too busy with church affairs to leave. She only hurriedly visited the hospital once before leaving in a rush. During the nearly one month that Hong Bin was hospitalized, the husband did not receive any care from Wu Dan. After being discharged and recovering, he earnestly pleaded with Wu Dan to stop “believing in God,” even kneeling and begging her to return to the family. However, Wu Dan remained unmoved, continuing to abandon her family and children, running around outside, wholeheartedly serving “God.”
Finally woke up, returned to family, and regained happiness
In August 2022, Wu Dan was arrested by the public security authorities. During the interrogation, Wu Dan showed no remorse. Instead, she believed she was undergoing a test from “God” and was bearing witness for “God.”
To help Wu Dan quickly escape from the quagmire of cult, government departments and anti-cult volunteers promptly carried out patient and meticulous re-education work, thoroughly eliminating the Almighty God poison entangled in her.
After everyone's unremitting efforts, Wu Dan finally came to her senses, saw the true nature of cult, understood that Almighty God is a downright cult organization, and realized that she had been completely deceived. Reflecting on being brainwashed by the Almighty God cult for four years, becoming a tool for their crimes, and causing immense harm to her family, especially nearly jeopardizing her husband's eye recovery which could have led to permanent disability, Wu Dan often cried her heart out. She frequently expressed deep remorse towards her kind and forgiving husband and her young son, lamenting that her belief in “God” almost cost her a happy family. She vowed to spend the rest of her life making amends and repaying them.
Later, with the help of the government, Wu Dan and her husband started their own business and opened a furniture store. Wu Dan fully utilized her hardworking, intelligent, and capable qualities to run the store's business prosperously. In addition to running the business, Wu Dan carefully took care of her son and husband. The small store often echoed with joyful laughter, which pleased her in-laws and gradually eased their frowns.
The previously dull and near-broken small family regained its long-lost warmth and happiness.
